Stock work & wood
Wood blanks, faithful duplicates of an original, and stocks built from scratch — plus repair, refinishing, and checkering. The part of this trade that most shops stopped doing.
Four kinds of stock work
Stock work is slow, specialized, and hard to find. It's also where a tired rifle becomes something worth handing down. Every job is different, so all stock work is quoted after we see the piece.
Wood blanks
Stock blanks for sale to builders, hobbyists, and anyone doing their own work. Tell us the pattern you're building toward and the grade you're after, and we'll tell you what's on hand.
Duplication
Send us the original and we'll make a copy. This is the answer for a cracked stock on a gun nobody makes parts for anymore, or a spare for a collectible you'd rather not shoot the original wood on.
Built from scratch
A custom stock made to your rifle and your measurements — length of pull, comb height, cast, the things that decide whether a gun fits you or fights you.
Repair, refinish & checkering
Cracks and breaks made sound again, old finishes brought back, and checkering recut or added. A lot of guns that look finished are one refinish away from looking right.
Why stock work is quoted, not listed
A posted price on stock work would be a guess, and usually the wrong one. What a job costs depends on the wood, the pattern, the condition of what you're bringing, and how much hand work it needs after the machine work is done.
A straightforward duplication in plain walnut and a from-scratch stock in figured wood with fresh checkering are different jobs by an order of magnitude. Pricing either one off a chart would mean overcharging some people and losing money on others.
So: bring it in or send photos, and you'll get a real number for your actual project — along with an honest read on whether the piece is worth the work. Sometimes it isn't, and we'll say so.
What helps us quote faster
- Make, model, and year of the gun if you know it
- Photos of the stock from a few angles, including any damage
- Whether you want it to match the original or improve on it
- Your measurements, if you already know what fits you

Stock work questions
How long does a stock take?
Longer than most work in the shop. Wood has to be worked, fitted, and finished, and finishing in particular can't be rushed without it showing. You'll get a realistic timeline with your quote.
Can you match my original wood?
Often closely, sometimes exactly, depending on species and figure. If an exact match matters to you, say so up front and we'll be honest about how close we can get.
Is my cracked stock repairable?
More often than people expect. Send photos of the break and we'll tell you whether it's a repair, a duplication, or a lost cause.
Do I have to ship you the whole gun?
For duplication we usually just need the stock, not the firearm. For a from-scratch build or a fitting, we may need the action. We'll tell you which before you ship anything.
Do you sell blanks to other gunsmiths?
Yes. Tell us the pattern and grade you're after and we'll tell you what's on hand.
Got a stock worth saving?
Send photos and the make and model, and you'll get a real number and an honest opinion on whether it's worth doing.
